Mapei's Iron Horse robs the race from the challengers

The iron willed Mapei team robbed their challengers of victory during the sprint to the line in Montcada i Reixac during the 6th stage of the Volta a Catalunya.
The race that featured a compact and ferocious run up to the line was held in hot, dry and windy conditions as the peloton headed south from the base of the Pyrenees towards the finishing town on the outskirts of the Catalan capital Barcelona. With all eyes on Freire, Hondo and McEwen into the finish, it was Freire's Belgian teammate Tom Steels who took the opportunity given to him to cross the line half a wheel ahead of McEwen. Following upon his win in the final stage of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque today's move gave Steels his second victory of the year.
The sprint followed a bustling final ten kilometres to the line where in the first instance the peloton had to hunt and neutralise the escape of Xabier Zandio (Banesto), Oscar Laguna (Relax) and Pietro Caucchioli (Alessio).
Banesto had started the day by releasing Zandio from the confines of the peloton at kilometre 13 with the objective of getting those other teams with riders aspiring to improve their position in GC to collaborate in the chase. Laguna and Caucchioli soon followed Zandio and within a few kilometres they had joined him and started to work consistently together. At the midway point of the stage they had managed to create a window of advantage of around 12 minutes. It was also around this point that USPS decided enough was enough and lifted the rhythm enough so as not to allow the gap to grow.
As the escapees came within the last 15 kilometres of their journey their understanding commenced to deteriorate as each tried to force a gap between himself and his companions. At around 13 km to go they had a gap of 1.43 to the peloton and not long after an attack by Caucchioli, Zandio called it a day and attempted to melt back into the anonymity of the peloton. Unfortunately he had used too much fuel and once caught was quickly shown the back door.
Under the 10 kilometre banner the two survivors had an advantage of 1.02 and the peloton was assembling in single file behind as Mapei and Lotto turned up the pace of the pursuit. The race started to enter the narrow transit lanes of a divided road and as they passed through a roundabout and swung left, the Mapei rider in second wheel (Horillo?) lost control of his front wheel as it slid out from under him. No one else followed but the head of the peloton was disrupted enough for riders to need to change tack, jump curbing, follow footpaths and bunny hop back on course. As they got under full steam again the gap stood at 1.05.
On to a brief section of highway and then as the escapees ran up the exit ramp, Laguna had one last go at leaving is partner behind. Caucchioli was not about to let him have any space and the two went up and off the ramp and down a long straight section lined on one side by a row of trees and the other a series of railway tracks and yards, they had entered La Llagosta and had a little over 4 km to go. To their rear, the iron horse of Mapei was full steam ahead and was bearing down on them, they were finally brought under the control of the train with fewer than 2 kilometres to go.
Fassa Bortolo moved up to try and place their men in control; Hondo had motored to the wheel of the man from the Gold Coast, McEwen, who was two bikes ahead of Freire. A couple of Lampre's like two lightly loaded shoppers trying to jump the line at the supermarket cash register, tried a run at it on the right hand side, but they were soon told to butt out and wait their turn.
As the argument at the head continued, Flecha (Banesto) took the opportunity to try and get through ahead of the rest. Konyshev gave chase and the sprint had started. Freire had Hondo in front of him, he rode up and tried in different ways to shoulder, lean and generally move the German out of the way, for coming back towards him off to the right of the main line of the sprint was Flecha. The Banesto rider now finished his go was seemingly rolling backwards to Freire. Hondo out muscled Freire, and accelerated, leaving the World Champion sitting still in his wake. Hondo was followed, first by Steels and then, McEwen. They both gave it all and quickly came past Hondo. Steels held off the Queenslander for the line.
It was an exciting tight little sprint to end a hot and dry day. Pedro Delgado summed up the day after the race, simply "Que Calor" - what heat; both the weather and the sprint were hot. And it was Steels who made the better of the two and the most of the excellent way his team worked together to control the race towards the end.
"Oscar and I had decided this morning that we were both going to count on each other during the final, depending on who was in the best position," explained Steels afterwards. "When the World Champion told me to 'go for it' about 20 kilometres from the finish, I just started thinking about crossing the finish line in first place. Todays win just a few days before the start of the Tour de France certainly boosts my confidence as I beat riders that I will have to battle with daily at the Grande Boucle."
