Hondo home ahead of Freire
Marichal the hero, Hincapie displays podium etiquette

The German rider Danilo Hondo of Team Telekom today made up for his lack of success in the recent Giro d'Italia when he convincingly out-sprinted reigning world champion, the Cantabrian Oscar Freire (Mapei). The everlasting Andrea Tafi led out Freire, but even that wasn't enough to stop the German. In the final result Tafi ended up third ahead of Konyshev (Fassa) in what was a high speed race to the line over a long, straight, slightly downhill last few kilometres.
The atmosphere before the race was tense, being dominated by the shadow of the national general strike set for this coming Thursday. The relationship between riders and organisers has carried on where it left off yesterday with the organisers for their part confident that the fourth stage will proceed to Pal, and the Spanish riders having no news other than their continued support for the nationwide industrial stoppage. The serious faces of directors, organisers and riders before the start told the story - a stand off. The riders have rejected the proposal to hold the stage totally within the borders of Andorra and the organisers are now facing another consequence, the desire of the Andorran Government to renegotiate their contract for the race and reduce the amount they are to pay as sponsors. Andorra relies heavily on its tourist appeal and with no crossing of their borders by either the Tour de France of the Vuelta a Espana the loss of week's Volta has not been received well and Andorra feels aggrieved by having to still make its contributions whilst losing the showcase stage.
The tension dissipated on the road and it was not long until the move of the day was made by Belgium's Thierry Marichel (Lotto) when he escaped at the 15km mark. Nobody was in the mood to assume the responsibility of leading the hunt and Marichal was permitted to hold a strong advantage for most of the stage. His move took him to hero status as he continued to stay away until km 173 logging a solo ride of 158km and at an advantage of 18 minutes after only 56km.

ONCE and USPS got to work during the latter parts of the stage and managed to lower the difference between themselves and Marichal by 12 minutes over the last 50km, finally neutralising the Lotto rider 10km from the end. Once Marichal was brought under control it was the turn of the sprinter's teams, Mapei and Telekom to take charge, pulling the peloton in single file and setting an asphyxiating rhythm on the quick downhill ramp to the line. It was, unexpectedly for some, Hondo who took the victory, more so in the light of the strong work of Tafi in driving Freire through the final stretches.
Freire said afterwards that it "was a final for riders with some weight as it was a slight downhill. I thought that the arrival kicked up a little rise but it was totally to the contrary, I tried but I merely turned the pedals as we say." Freire admitted that he had "missed a good occasion for a victory "as he has found himself in "pretty good form and this edition of the Volta doesn't have much terrain for the sprinters to shine on".
Hondo on the other hand was delighted with his win saying that it "is a very important victory for me, but the hero of the stage was Marichal with his marathon escape on a day that was pretty hard due to the heat." He recognised that his victory was not an easy one but that he was aided by the downhill finish, "to beat Freire is not easy," he concluded.

Yesterday's leader Boonen lost considerable time today, as did a few others including Aussies Matt White and Robbie McEwen, all of whom fell behind over the Cat. 1 climb about two thirds of the way through the stage. The leader's jersey passed then to Boonen's team-mate and captain for the Volta, George Hincapie who performed with etiquette and decorum by accepting the jersey and pointing the champagne towards the crowd and gathered press avoiding the creation of any further stickiness for the podium girls.
Tomorrow's stage could well end up being more important than first thought. Although short, with the possibility of no sortie to Pal on Thursday, the uphill 10.8km time trial with its seven percent finishing ramps to the ski station at Boa Taoll may well prove to be decisive.
