Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale - 2.9.1France, August 4-18, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 13 - August 17: Chartres - Lisieux, 143.6kmTeutenberg gives Saturn fourth stage win, Stahurskaia maintains Maillot OrBy Chris Henry, Cyclingnews correspondent The final road stage of the 2002 Grande Boucle Féminine took the remaining 78 riders from 143.6km Northwest from Chartres to Lisieux, one and a half hours west of Paris in the heart of Normandy. The peloton assembled for the start in front of the Chartres cathedral, famous for its stained glass windows. Today's penultimate stage represented perhaps the last chance for second place overall Susanne Ljungskog (Vlaanderen-T Interim) to make up time on overall leader Zinaida Stahurskaia (USC Chirio). Although Ljungskog has ridden aggressively and regained time through bonus sprints in recent stages, the 35 second deficit to Stahurskaia began to look more definitive after Stahurskaia's stage win yesterday in Châteaudun. Nevertheless, the optimistic Swede Ljungskog promised before the stage that she would attack today and pull out all the stops in tomorrow's final time trial in an effort to overtake Stahurskaia. With most of the peloton already thinking of tomorrow's final test in Paris, the number of serious attacks in this generally flat stage to Lisieux was limited. The first serious break did not escape until 68km to the finish, with a trio moving clear that contained three stage winners of this year's Tour. Saturn's Ina Teutenberg, Madeleine Lindberg (Farm Frites-Hartol), and world champion Rasa Polikeviciute (Acca Due O) worked well together to build an advantage on the peloton, which did not appear overly anxious to chase given that these three did not figure in the top three of the general classification. Two riders did manage to bridge to the leading trio, as Emma James (C.A. Mantes-la-Ville) and the ever-aggressive Daniela Veronesi (Edilsavino) countered from the peloton and joined the break. This new group of five wouldn't stay together too long, however, as Teutenberg and Polikeviciute attacked and broke clear with just under 20km remaining to the finish. The strength of the two leaders was evident, as the duo quickly gained an advantage of 1'24" over the next group of three. Meanwhile, behind this group another three women had escaped the clutches of the peloton, though they never came within 3 minutes of the first chasers. In this second chase were Magalie Finot, Marta Vilajosana and Baukje Doedee. With the peloton resigned to letting the breaks take their chances, the anticipated attacks from Susanne Ljungskog seemed less likely as Lisieux approached, with no major difficulties in the day's stage to provide the necessary springboard. With only the two leaders working well together, the gaps behind Teutenberg and Polikeviciute with 5km to go were 2'35" to the first chase, and over 4 minutes to the second chase. The match between these two leaders was interesting. Teutenberg would seem the likely pick to win a sprint, but any sprint between two leaders becomes less predictable after a long break. Furthermore, Polikeviciute demonstrated in last fall's World Championships in Lisbon that she has a fine turn of speed for a rider considered more climber than sprinter. In the final kilometers, it was indeed Polikeviciute who took the first initiative to attack. Sensing that she did not in fact have the legs to contest a sprint against the powerful Saturn sprinter, the Lithuanian tried to break clear. Her move was short-lived, and Teutenberg closed the gap with ease. Pedalling more fluidly and at a higher cadence than Polikeviciute, Teutenberg took advantage of the momentum and countered with a more impressive attack of her own, to which the world champion had no response. As she opened a gap of several hundred meters, Teutenberg could see the stage was hers. Polikeviciute simply didn't have the strength to lift the pace, and the Saturn rider soloed in to Lisieux for her second stage win of the Tour, and a fourth victory for the Saturn team. Polikeviciute claimed her second place, and in the process regained several minutes for the general classification, although her time gain was not big enough to move up on GC. Behind her, the first chase group of three battled out the remaining places in the top five, with Swedish rider Madeleine Lindberg taking the sprint ahead of Italy's Daniela Veronesi and Emma James of Australia. The next three chasers arrived 4'53" behind stage winner Teutenberg, followed by the peloton at 5'45", with the green jersey of Olga Slioussareva (Itera Team) edging out Saturn's Judith Arndt once again. On the eve of tomorrow's final time trial in western Paris, the top general classification remained unchanged, with Zinaida Stahurskaia holding what would seem an insurmountable lead of 35" over Susanne Ljungskog, but don't tell that to Ljungskog just yet. The lanterne rouge of this year's Tour, Cynthia Compain, finished just behind the main peloton today, but sits 5 hours, 50 minutes behind the Maillot Or.
