GS Ciao Time Trial Series

June 14, 2006, Boulder, CO

Baldwin Raises The Bar

By Robert Hicken

A new time trial series has just taken form in Boulder, CO. It is the inception of Clark Sheehan (former top U.S. pro for the 7-Up cycling team) and has been in the works for a few years. The course is a point to point 10.1 mile straight shot from Lyons to Boulder and starts will a gradual 3 mile climb that puts the riders in the red zone right from the gun. Many top time trialists have made their presence known in the last 2 weeks with Will Frischkorn winning the first week with a time of 23:54, giving TIAA-CREF the first win in the series.

This past week had one of the top U.S. time trialists test his skills over the challenging course as Chris Baldwin showed up to blaze the course. Maintaining his full aero tuck position throughout the challenging climb, he crested the hill as if he was on a tow line and must have ramped his speed over 30 mph for the next 6 miles in order to set the record on this course. He shot through the last part of the rolling highway to finish at a scorching 22:17 which would set his average at close to 29 mph.

This was 1:33 faster than second placed Dirk Friel and a full 1:37 faster then Will Frischkorn’s mark set last week. This mark might hold for the rest of the summer as rider’s only have till July 5th to attempt a defeat this time. The series has excellent support from GS CIAO which controls the traffic over this busy highway and ensures the safety of the riders.
