East Canyon Road Race

Henefer, Utah, April 29, 2006

The East Canyon Road Race is a spring classic for Utah racers. With the past few years rainy and cold, throngs of racers basked in the sun and warmth of this years edition. The course is an 60 mile out and back that has good sized climb that the field needs to climb both ways. The finish is on a tough 3/4 mile 6% pitch.

It didn't take long for the race to sort itself out. Two miles into the race and right before the start of the first climb, Sandy Perrins (Sienna Development/Goble Knee) attacked and was followed by several riders. Over the top of the first climb, the break was down to only 4 riders: Perrins, Todd Hageman (Park City Cycliing Academy), Aaron Jordin (Porcupine/Specialized) and Chris Stuart (ICE/Rocky Mountain Surgery Center).

With each big team represented and the break working well together, the break established over a 10 minute gap on the field by the turnaround. We the race pretty much over, the field started picking up the pace looking for the remaining places. At the bottom of the 4 mile climb, Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators) attacked with Sam Krieg on his wheel.

The two would stay away from the charging field. Up front, with 200 meters to go and a 6% kick to the finish, Aaron Jordin was the first to attack. Hageman and Perrins caught Jordins wheel and Stuart was gapped. Perrins attacked with Hageman following. Perrins won the kick up to the finish line for a great win.
