Eatonville, Washington, February 26, 2005

Reijnen outfoxes the veterans

Kiel Reijnen (First Rate Mortgage) started the year off with a bang by winning the first road race of the 2005 Washington State season. As a result he is also the first Washington Cup leader. On the start of this brutal, Paris-Roubaix style course, few would have picked the young, light rider as the favorite. In fact, many predicted the race winner would be a power rider running a cyclocross bike and tires. Reijnen himself hardly sounded confident. A lighter rider on a stock Torelli Stiletto road frame with 700 x 23 tires, he noted that the course would at least prepare him for racing in Belgium.

The race began somewhat slowly as the riders felt out the course. However, A third lap flat for Michael Emde (Starbucks Doubleshot) motivated a group of three riders - Reijnen, Justin Morgan (Broadmark Capital) and Michael Murdin (Garage) to put the pressure on and they set a workman like pace to eliminate the Strongman from Spokane. In the lead group Murdin and Morgan set tempo, while Reijnen remained calm. A late flat by Murdin looked to put the lead group's rhythm in trouble but a quick wheel change and the group was again working together with 20 seconds lead over the chasing Emde. However, the effort to rejoin clearly took its toll on Murdin who dislodged from the lead group as Morgan dropped the hammer at three to go. Emde caught Murdin and with two to go had the gap at 15 seconds. With one lap remaining, Reijnen played his hand and jumped away to solo to victory, floating over the short climb to seal his victory. Morgan held on for second and Emde managed to claw back third place. Murdin clearly deserved better, but had to settle for fourth.

Junior - 2 laps (4 miles)

Nolan Hayden (Aurora Cycles) was the lone starter in the Junior field. This did not mean he got a free ride as he was sent out 30 seconds after the Masters field with instructions not to get lapped. His victory was well deserved as he staved off the Masters field to finish 2 strong laps in epic style and had the class to put an all out dig for the finish.

Masters - 12 laps (24 miles)

Despite talk in the field of a gentlemanly first lap, Greg Goad (Starbucks Doubleshot / Spoke & Sprocket) made few friends on the day by attacking immediately. His strategy put him into the hardpack sections first and the field entered about 10 seconds down. The situation quickly reversed itself as a crash by Goad and the efforts of the Half Fast Velo and Momentum Sports teams quickly brought him back. Michael Emde (Starbucks Doubleshot) countered and used his experience racing cobblestones to push a big gear up and over the climb immediately gained a gap. The field slowly fell apart with a 3 man chase group slowly losing ground with several riders chasing behind. Emde was never in danger until a puncture with 1 lap to go. A quick wheel change got him back on the course and able to hold off the hard charging chase.

Cat 4/5 - 10 laps (20 miles)

Perhaps the best spectacle, the 3/4/5 race saw an evenly matched field of riders and a tendency towards small groups rather than solo efforts. In the end however, Phillipe Huber was able to slip off the front to win.

Spirit of Ohop Award: Most Inspiring Ride

This award is given to the rider whose ride on the day was most inspiring. Although Michael Emde's efforts are worthy of note the award goes to David Jordan (Momentum Sports). He flatted early in the Masters race and, unable to get a wheel change, fixed his flat manually and then rejoined the race. A lap down and out of contention, Jordan continued to ride at 100% effort matching the lead riders in both effort and speed . He definitely deserves the "Spirit of Ohop" award for most courageous ride.
