Shamrock Criterium

Newport News, VA, March 21, 2004

Seven-man break laps field

Richmond’s elite cyclists watched seven riders break away from the field to demolish the half-mile Shamrock Criterium course at the John S. Todd Stadium in Newport News. The seven-man break worked together to lap the field. James River Velo Sport sponsored the annual criterium around the stadium.

Any effort to bring the breakaway back failed. A brutal, constant headwind, on the far side of the course, forced any individual, willing to chase the break, back into the main group.

With his eighth place, John Schindler of Richmond Ciclismo finished the highest among the Richmond area riders and the highest among the lapped field. After the race, United States Cycling Federation officials picked through the photo finish pictures to determine placements among the lapped and winning break riders.

So Schindler had no idea of how well he finished.

Throughout the race, individual riders tried to get away from the field only to be absorbed in the pack within a couple of laps.

“It was hard to stay off the front. No one wanted to let a single guy go up the road,” Schindler said. “It seemed like everyone wanted a piece of the action.”

Only the cohesive effort kept the break going. Rich Harper of Cane Creek, Ron Henson and Paul Ward of Atlantic Velo, Colin Barry of D’Oro Cycles, Zack Browne of National Capital Velo, Joseph D’Antoni of Greensboro Velo and Robert Suydam of Virginia Beach Velo kept a steady and intense pace until they caught the field.

With one lap to go, Matt Dinsmore of Richmond Ciclismo tangled his bike and crashed. Team physician Matt Marchal diagnosed a separated shoulder on the scene.

“This guy got squirrelly in front of me going into the turn,” Dinsmore said. “My handlebars locked with another and the next I know, I went down.”

Team Cobblestone’s J.H. Revere won his category 4 race. That was one shining moment for the area’s riders.

Except for individual efforts, the pack stayed together during the 15 mile race.

Coming into the final corner, Revere moved into third place.

“On the far side, with the wind, I decided to attack as hard as I could and try to hold it until the tailwind section before the start/finish line,” Revere said. “I saw David Winchester (of Virginia Beach Velo) doing exactly what I was doing but he was leading out another guy. So I jumped on that train.”

So did Chris Lulei of the Hilton Cycling Club. Revere hung on as Lulei came through the last corner strong. Lulei placed second.

In other notable Richmond results, Leigh Carter of SP Imports/Palini Drive and Terry Ashby and Matt Mega of Richmond Ciclismo placed fifth, tenth and twelfth respectively in the 30 to 40-year-old race.

Next week, area cyclists will head to the rolling hills of Scottsville (outside of Charlottesville) for the first District 42 road race of the year, The Jefferson Cup. Last year, Wes Siegler, then of West Virginia Professional Cycling and now with SP Imports/Palini Drive won the elite men’s event.
