Blue Bell Bike Race

ACT-UPMC Dominates Philly Tune-Up

By Mike Fraysse, ACT-UPMC

One year to the day after a freak crash in a training race in New Jersey nearly cost him his left leg, ACT-UPMC's Joe Papp showed that he might be riding better than ever by winning the Pro/Am Blue Bell Circuit Race in Blue Bell, PA. Papp broke away from the remnants of the elite men's field along with his teammate Alvaro Tardaguila and Eric Murphy (Aerospace Engineering) with 12 miles left in the 50-mile race. He then took a comfortable sprint victory ahead of Floridian Murphy, with Tardaguila finishing a contented 3rd.

"While I finished first today, this was a victory for the team," said a jubilant Papp. "From the first kilometer we were the dominant team, always with a rider on the attack, always forcing the other teams to respond to us." ACT-UPMC were clearly the favorites for victory, starting a full team of seven riders, including first-year senior Ryan Mele of Pennsylvania. As the flag dropped for the start of Blue Bell, which covered 10 laps of a technical five-mile circuit near Montgomery Community College, the team sent Eneas Freyre up the road to force the pace early. Though the field quickly responded, ACT-UPMC succeeded in breaking one rider clear of the field: the Argentine Alejandro Acton, who went away after 15 miles of racing.

With unseasonably cold temperatures and steady rain falling throughout the day, lone escapee Acton was able to maintain his lead on the tricky course, while behind in the field the ESSM/GPOA team from Pittsburgh, PA tried to organize a chase. Navigators' riders Marty Nothstein and Siro Camponagora both attempted to bridge the gap to the leader, but each attack and counterattack was followed by at least one, if not two, ACT-UPMC riders.

Finally, with three laps to go, fatigue began to slow Acton and on the backside of the course he was caught. An immediate counterattack came from Papp and Tardaguila, however, with Murphy covering the move. As Acton shouted encouragement to his teammates, the ACT-UPMC duo drove the pace relentlessly. Camponagora almost bridged to the trio, but he fell heavily in a slick left-hand turn in which Papp himself had crashed earlier in the race. "I don't know what happened," lamented a visibly-hurt Camponagora. "Someone told me later that there was oil in the turn, but now I am sure that I will not race in Philadelphia tomorrow." It was an unfortunate result for the friendly Italian.

Up ahead, the ACT-UPMC duo kept rotating, with Tardaguila doing more work than Papp in hopes of sparing his team leader for a sprint, should they be caught from behind. Though Murphy refused to share in the pacemaking, Tardaguila rode with the strength of two men, and with less than two miles to the finish, the breakaway's lead was assured. Twice the Floridian attacked the ACT-UPMC riders, but they quickly neutralized both attacks, and Papp surged ahead before the final corner, to take a comfortable victory. His work done for the day, Tardaguila sat-up and coasted across the line for third.

"This was an important victory for the team," explained Papp after the finish. "We had the worst luck at Somerville last weekend - I flatted with 3 laps to go and then the entire team crashed there in the last turn while leading out Ale, so you can imagine the morale boost we needed." The dominant performance in Blue Bell by the ACT-UPMC riders served notice to the east coast peloton that the team is on great form, though their next major race won't be in the USA. Instead, the team travels to South Korea for the Tour of Korea (UCI 2.5) on June 9.
