Bring It On! Race Series #2

Alachua, FL, January 31, 2004

By Team Florida Racing

The second full edition of this series brought a full slate of repeat customers in the winner's circle. The races, held under cool overcast skies, featured all manner of action resulting in three distinct sprint finishes, a four up breakaway sprint, a field sprint and a one on one match up.

In the A grade competition, US National Champion Bobby Lea (Team Fuji) returned to repeat his previous weeks performance. Riding without much team support this week, he was still able to come away with a handy victory. The race was nearly over almost immediately after it had begun. On the third of 25 laps, Lea, Dan Larson (Cycle Science), Gary Yates (unattached), and Anton Tupa (UF Cycling) rode clear in a smooth coalition and never looked back. While the field forged a late chase the powerful group edged the lead ever bigger until the elastic finally snapped. To spite being within sight of lapping the field, the breakaway settled for a sprint amongst the four with Lea taking a clear win. Larson edged Yates for third and Tupa rounded out the group result. Further back, David Gutenplan (Locos) slipped away from a late forming chase group for 5th.

The B grade event was a chance for past winner (2002) Alex Rodriguez (UF Cycling-Blue) to confirm his recovery from nagging injuries suffered in the past few years. After a long recovery from consecutive knee, neck, back injuries, Rodriguez was keen to showcase some form. In both weeks one and two of the B grade series, he had placed 2nd. As has become the traditional mode of finish in the B events, the race concluded with a wild field sprint. Rodriguez keenly made use of his teammates throughout the race in order to save energy and position him for the final dash. Rodriguez cleared the final turn to the finish first and claimed the clearest victory of the B series so far. The closest challenger to Rodriguez for the overall series Brock Adams (UF Cycling-Orange), finished in second. Seth Hansley (unattached), Mark Ganpaigne (SGAC), and Paul Johnson (UF Cycling-Orange) rounded out the top five respectively.

The Women's event seemed to promise a re-run of the domination of top elite woman Rebecca McClintock (Colavita/Bolla) and while the result still placed her on top, she faced probably her closest challenge to date. Mandi Hall (Bike Route), who had claimed the first of the women's series races in McClintock's absence, was not going to roll over on this day either. After quickly teaming up to overcome the large 2 ½ min handicap to the rest of the field, the two rode clear to face each other head to head. While McClintock led through the final turn, Hall made a hard charge to the line and nearly passed for the win. McClintock managed to edged her out and retain a slim lead in the overall standings. Nancy Bruner (FSU) continued to showcase her fast finish with a win from the main field for 3rd place. Michele Moss (UF Cycling), and Cate Prier (unattached) completed the top five finishers.
