Saco Bay Criterium

Saco, Maine, August 21, 2004

King takes "fastest race in New England"

Robby King (Louis Garneau) bridged across to the breakaway duo of Justin Lillie (Trek)and Mike Barton (Ibex/FitWerx)halfway through the Saco Bay Criterium Presented by Maine Energy, and still had enough power left to flash across the finish line for the win on Saturday.

Lillie and Barton broke away in the opening laps of the criterium, called "the fastest race in New England" because of its pancake-flat profile and broad home stretch. When King came across with the help of his brother Brian King (Racksmith.com) at the halfway mark, the foursome quickly established nearly a minute gap on the field.

But it almost wasn't enough. The hard-chasing pack threw caution to the wind in a torrential downpour and brought the lead down to just eight seconds with one lap to go. In the final circuit, the field had just reeled the foursome in when a crash took out the first three riders in the chase. The resulting mayhem slowed the pack down and Lillie, Barton and the two Kings were left to fight out the finish for themselves.

Robbie King made it look easy, taking the laurels with a time of 1:08:01. Barton, Brian King and Lillie followed in that order. Ward Solar (ACT/UMPC) won the field sprint for fifth five seconds later.
