Newport Storm Brewery Ninigret Criterium

Charlestown, RI, April 18, 2004

The Arc-En-Ciel racing team hosted the Newport Storm Brewery Ninigret Criterium on Saturday, April 17th in Charlestown, Rhode Island. We finally had a nice spring day in New England as it was sunny temps in the high 50's. Over 250 racers showed up with numerous riders doubling up to do 2 or more races. The Ninigret course is on a old navy landing field, totally closed to all traffic and a great place to watch a bike race. One of the many highlights of the day was the kiddies race as the 1-10 year olds got their first taste of bike racing.

The main event of the day, the Cat 1-2-3 race was aggressive from the gun. A break of 5 soon developed off the front to be joined shortly later by 3 more riders. The group of eight worked well together and soon had a big gap on the field. The host team (Arc-En-Ciel) had 2 riders in the break along with CCB. Strong men Amos Brumble (CCB) and Bobby Bailey (Racksmith) were taking some big boy pulls to keep the break away. A very short attack from the race promoter (me) with 2 laps to go went nowhere and the break went into the cat and mouse mode. As we slowed down 2 more riders joined up to make a 10 man last lap sprint. In a move that every cat 4/5 rider show be required to learn, Conor Coffey (CCB) jumped with 350 yards to go as the rest of us were looking at each other, got a 10 yard gap and held it to the line for the victory. Conor went home with a big smile on his face and a new Ben Frankiln in his pocket for his efforts.
