Semana Nautica Pro Criterium

Santa Barbara, June 28, 2003

Report by Team Monex

The 90 minute Semana Nautica Pro Criterium was held Saturday on a challenging circuit in Downtown Santa Barbara. The riders knew they were in for a long day when the attacks started the first time up the circuits main climb. Monex, Schroeder Iron, RPM, Sierra Nevada, and Ofoto were hard at playing the match up tactic.

Just 4 laps into the race, Ryan Barrett (Monex), Ryan Lane (RPM), Rigo Meza (Schroeder Iron) were part of a group of 5 riders going clear. With all of the major teams represented, it was up t the solo riders to try to bring the race back into control. Instead the filed splintered into several groups some trying to bridge, some sitting on now wanting to bring more dangerous riders into the leading group.

Finally a group of 13 riders went away and were on their way to lapping the field. Included in the group were 3 Monex riders, 3 Schroeder Iron, 2 RPM, 2 Sierra Nevada, and 1 Ofoto plus several other individuals. With Schroeder's new riders, Gordon McCauley in the group, everyone was aware of his place on the road.

McCauley tried several times to get clear but to no avail as Monex and RPM with Harm Jansen, Thurlow Rogers, Ken Toman and John Wordin keeping things in order.

With 10 laps to go, Ryan Barrett went clear with 2 other riders that had lapped the field as well as Rogers. Rogers helped power the group, but soon Ryan Lane and McCauley made it across to contest for the win. McCauley attacked with 3 laps to go and the break had no answer. Barrett just nipped at the line for 2nd.
