Agiskoviner cycling club

Eelmore, June 21, 2006

"Windy as hell" was how one person described the conditions tonight. The Agisko and Viner branded EZ UP, brought to us by our sponsors in Italy, had to be tied to the car with inner tubes to stop it flying away!

Talking of flying, in the E/1/2 race, another move went from the gun containing Paul Pickup and Anders Christensen (both www.agiskoviner.com/LiphookCycles), Justin Hoy (Evans Cycles RT) and Tim Elverson (VC Meudon). These four drew out a handy lead until Justin decided to come back to the pack. Meanwhile the remaining three riders forged ahead steadily and built a gap that no-one else was ever going to bridge. Such was their pace, they lapped the whole E/1/2 field by half distance and continued to pull away. Poor old Tim was left to struggle with two of the best Eelmore riders that there has been in Paul and Anders! He was working away nicely and doing his turns, until the last 10 laps when both the agiskoviner lads started to put in little digs to begin tiring him out. Tim has risen from the 4th category ranks to being a competent 1st category thanks to some impressive rides this season, but it is hard to combat the old "one - two", no matter who it is coming from. When it is coming from two of the strongest local riders around, it must have been purgatory! Paul ended up with the win and Anders romped home ahead of Tim for 2nd, making it another www.agiskoviner.com/LiphookCycles 1 - 2. Leading in the broken field was another agiskoviner rider, Lee Smith, so overall, a very good night for the southern based club. For more information about them, go to www.agiskoviner.com.

The 3rd and 4th category riders had a shock in store for them when it came to the finishing gallop tonight. 15 year old Erick Rowsell (Team Corridori) showed them all a very clean pair of heels to snap up the win. This was after a very brave lone effort by Wouter Sybrandy from the Hounslow and District Wheelers. He had spent a lot of time off the front during the event, was caught but just hung on for a very well deserved 2nd place. Sam Sturgeon (Team Trackcycling.co.uk) rounded off the podium slots with another breakaway from the bunch, something that, thankfully, is becoming a feature of the lower category racing at Eelmore this season. Long may it continue, as it provides faster and more exciting racing. A special word for the 4th placed rider tonight - Dan Guest - from the Army Cycling Union. He's not been road racing for very long, but he's certainly got his head around the Eelmore circuit, as he's now placed in the top 10 twice. I doubt he will stay a 4th or 3rd category rider for very long; the Army have a real talent in their ranks in that man. Well done and keep it up.

There were only two youths in attendance, so they used their event as a warm up in order to "ride up" into the 3/4 event. Erick Rowsell also won the well contested sprint, before going on to demolish the senior event! Rob Jackson (www.agiskoviner.com) continues to improve by pushing Erick hard in the sprint and then getting round comfortably with the senior riders. A bit more application to his training will see him improve even more.
