Eelmore Circuit race #5, June 2, 2004

Youths

There were a few more youths tonight, but both Gareth Dickinson and James Boyman had bigger fish to fry in the 3/4's event, however that did not stop James taking first place after a steady ride round. Toby Meadows just pipped Gareth Dickinson for second, a disappointment for Gareth, but he was to make up for that later in the senior race. Read on! Rob Jackson, Andrew Ferris and Lucy Chittendon raced it out, with Rob taking it from Lucy and then Andrew. Youngest rider on the night, and probably most keen, was Max Stedman from Reading CC, who had the smallest bike and quickest legs. He continued riding after the senior events had finished and his dad had to literally drag him off the circuit and into the car to get him home. (I think we'll be seeing more of him in future weeks!)

3/4/W/V/J

With Allsports Energy products (www.allsports-int.co.uk) and herbalife energy bars (courtesy of Robin Dix of VC Meudon - for more info e-mail him on robin.dix@ntlworld.com) on offer at laps 8, 16 and 24 (of 31) laps as primes, this organiser cannot be accused of trying to break up the race and get things going. HOWEVER, he did not count on the resilience of the 3/4 cat bunch to keep things together and contest a massed bunch gallop yet again. Another real headache to judge, which we would not have been able to manage had Doug Pickup not been in attendance to operate the video camera and record the action. Fortunately, after some interruptions by over zealous riders, we managed to place the top 10 fair and square and there were no protestations, so we had it right again. Thank you the judges! Winning by half a wheel in a very tight sprint was Youth rider Gareth Dickinson of Team Luciano. His dad Nigel (F & C CC) was also riding, but he wasn't close enough to the action to see his son win apparently, so Gareth more than made up for the "disappointment" of only placing 3rd in the Youths only event. Local sprinter Steve Ferris (VC Meudon) continued his run of top placings with a fine 2nd place, while newcomer and former Giro D'Italia rider (well he was Italian!) Gianluca Cappello (British Airways CC) pinching 3rd. Overall the primes did liven things up for a lap or two before and after the primes, but things soon settled back to normal. Anyone any suggestions on how to split them up??? (Max Stedman's dad, Paul, also placed 10th, so father done well too!)

E/1/2

Off from the gun seems to be the theme common to riders coming to Eelmore for some fast racing, and tonight was no exception. This time it was Freerider RT rider Mark Pettitt taking his chance with Richard Wakor (PrestigeVC.com/Viner/MAR Support Services) and Luke Myers of Team Axiom. This did not last long until the Evans RT and Liphook boys rode them down. The race split with six riders off the back and all the main contenders up ahead. Despite numerous attempts to get away, with Paul Pickup and Lee Day (Liphook Cycles RT) and Justin Hoy and Chris Birch (Evans RT) taking it in turn to attack, the rest were left to follow and try and get onto the right move. The selection was made with 12 laps to go when Lee Day, Luke Myers and Justin Hoy escaped from the break. They looked strong and worked well together to stay away. Paul Pickup did try to get across, but was baulked as he passed the 3/4 riders and the attempt fizzled out. Into the last lap and the betting was on Lee Day, given that he is a decent sprinter, but his wheel pulled over (bad admin, stand in the corner and repeat 100 times - "I must put my bikes together properly!"), so he lost out to Justin Hoy. Luke Myers is no sprinter, I don't think that is a closely guarded secret, so he was up against it for anything better than 3rd out of 3, but after his earlier suicidal break, he thoroughly deserved the placing. Well done that man! (Back in the pack, Mark Pettitt burst away to land 4th followed in by the rest of the break in various states of fatigue after the fastest racing we have seen this year so far.)
