Ingliston Criterium Series #1

April 8, 2004

Oliphant and Reidy sprint to victory

Now in its sixth season, the Ingliston Criterium Series promoted by Edinburgh RC kicked off the 2004 season with 70 riders taking part. In the Premier League race, local team, Pedal Power were fielding five riders and team captain Jonny McBain led by example by starting the action early and staying away for a lap. As he was caught it was team-mate Findlay Pretsell who attacked and he was quickly joined by Bryan Russell (Scotoil). But the bunch were having none of it and the move was soon neutralised. Pedal Power were present in the next attack with David Lines in the company of Evan Oliphant (Velo Ecosse), Rob Scott (Classic Walls) and Martin Lonie (Johnstone Wheelers). In the acceleration for the first sprint prime the group was swallowed up, but Oliphant still had enough to take the prime points from Ross Crook (Edinburgh RC) and Gary Willis (Velo Ecosse). There was plenty of activity but no one could establish a significant lead before the second sprint which was taken by Russell from McBain and Willis. Lonie put in a strong attack and was joined by Calum McGregor (GS Modena) but they never got more than 4 seconds on the bunch where Martin Ross (ERC), last year's winner of the Division One series was active in closing the gap.

Pretsell attacked again through the finish but his effort lasted only half a lap before Russell had a go chased by veteran Ray Reidy (Kingdom RT) and McBain. Their lead was limited to 3 seconds but as they were caught Reidy had another go with 5 laps left. He was still away with 4 to go and had been joined by Pretsell and team-mate John McCaffery. When they were joined by McKenzie McPherson (Falkirk BC), Willis and another Kingdom RT rider Darren Howitt it looked like it could be the winning move. With 2 left they had 3 seconds but at the bell it was gruppo compatto and eyes down for the inevitable sprint finish. It was also pretty inevitable that Oliphant should win this with relative ease from Russell and McGregor. Veteran Andy Laing making a rare appearance at Ingliston used his track speed to sneak into the top 10 in 9th place.

In the supporting race last year's runner up Tony Reidy (Kingdom RT) was a clear winner in the final sprint from Ben Abrahams (Velo Ecosse) and Colin Fergus (Unattached). He also picked up a first and third in the sprints with another junior Bruce Wallace (Classic Walls) winning the other sprint prime.
