Ingliston Criterium Series #5

May 22, 2003

Oliphant makes it three on the trot!

By Neil Muir

Evan Oliphant (Velo Ecosse) continued his recent run of success, winning his third race in the Ingliston Criterium Series in a row. In a race of constant attacking by the bigger teams of the race, Pedal Power and Edinburgh Road Club, he was set up by his team-mate John Stollery to unleash his devastating sprint from a seven -man break which went clear after the third sprint prime.

Gary Hand (Pedal Power) started hostilities as early as the second lap but he was quickly closed down by Oliphant. He tried again to open a gap on the next lap but this time it was Stollery, who spotted the danger and brought up the bunch. Pedal Power's team captain Jonathan McBain was next to try to escape with Hand but the bunch was having none of it. Oliphant increased his lead in the overall and sprints competition by taking the first sprint prime from Calum McGregor (GS Modena) and David Lines (Pedal Power).

Act two featured the Edinburgh Road Club choreographied by captain Russell, with first Smith, then Garrett attempting to break the elastic. Next it was Russell himself, and his powerful surge prompted a promising move featuring Oliphant, McGarrity (Scotoil) and Lines, but this was also neutralised before the second sprint prime which was again won by Oliphant.

McGregor opened the final act, winning the third sprint from Russell and McGarrity and this crescendo of speed provoked the crucial split in the bunch with a group of seven including also Hand, Oliphant, Stollery and Hamish McLean (Midlothian RT) getting clear. With three laps to go Stollery launched a massive attack from the break and McBain was trying to bridge from the bunch which was 13 seconds down. Stollery powered on but his slender lead was down to 2 seconds with Hand leading the chase. McBain had been joined by Lines and later by Garrett but they had left it too late. At the bell, Stollery's gallant effort had failed and the break started to finesse for the final sprint with its predictable result.

King Oliphant (192pts) increased his lead in the table with McGregor (147) leapfrogging Russell (140) into second place.

There was drama and tragedy in the supporting race with series leader Martin Ross (Edinburgh Road Club) crashing heavily on the last corner and failing to finish. Ben Abrahams (West Midlands) took his first win of the series after riding a strong race but man-of-the-race Sean Rhodes (Edinburgh Road Club) who had been aggressive throughout, went back to the top of the table (164 pts) after finishing third from the 8 strong break. Ross drops to second place in the table with 160 points with Pete Lambie retaining third (159).
