Day 5 - August 19: Ashdown Forest circuit road race, 73.4 miles
Epic finale to Evans Cycles-Surrey League 5 day cycle race
In a race full of surprises, the final day was no exception as Paul Griffin, from the Irish Ras Mumhan team, won the 7th edition of the Evans Cycles-Surrey League 5 Day cycle race with a strong and tactical ride. His team, including overnight leader Brian Kenneally, controlled the peloton in the early part of the final 75 mile stage held in the Ashdown Forest to allow Griffin to go clear as part of a leading group of 7 on the long climb to Kings Standing.
The group worked together to open up a three minute advantage, with Danny Axford (Parrot Print) powering clear in the final miles to win the fifth and final stage. As riders were left struggling on the many long and steep climbs another important change took place as Matthew Melville (VC St Raphael) scored enough points to take the title 'King of the Mountains' from the previous holder Roger Morgan (Parrot Print).
Justin Hoy (Evans Cycles RT) retained the Best Sprinter's Green jersey and Steven Richards (VC Meudon) was the best placed Second Category rider.
