Evans Cycles - Surrey League 5 Day

Day 3 - August 17

Stage 3a: Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit ITT, 2.4 miles

As Britain's longest cycle race continued into its third day, Manx ace Andrew Roche, riding for the Irish Ras Mumhan team, won the morning's time trial around a single lap of Goodwood motor racing circuit in what was thought to be a record time. The biggest beneficiary of the short time trial was Gary Dodd (Sigma Sport RT) who took over the leader's yellow jersey from the Irish overnight leader Paul Griffin.

Stage 3b: August 17: Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit road race, 84.3 miles

The afternoon's stage of 84 miles around the South Downs saw a breakaway group of 13 riders go clear in the opening miles and build a lead that at one time exceeded 4 minutes. Most of the main teams were represented in the break with VC St Raphael, Energy Cycles, Evans RT and Parrot Print RT each having two riders but the greatest beneficiary looked to be Dave Berkeley (Sigma Sport RT) who looked like becoming the new race leader. However, in an exciting finale the main bunch reduced the group's lead to less than two minutes and at the finish Justin Hoy (Evans RT) produced an outstanding sprint to win the stage ahead of Timmy Barry (Ras Mumhan) and Berkeley.

Dodd narrowly retained the leader's jersey at the end of the day and Hoy's win consolidated his place at the top of the Sprints competition. Meanwhile, there was a major shake-up in the mountains classification which Roger Morgan (Parrot Print) now leads from breakaway companion Matt Melville (VC St Raphael).

Tomorrow the race heads for East Sussex for its longest stage of 100 miles around the pretty country lanes of Herstmonceux. With so much hard racing still to come, and with the time gaps still close, anything can happen in this exciting race.
