Ingliston Crit Series kicks off with a win for Macgregor

By Neil Muir

Comeback man Calum MacGregor (GSModena) took the spoils in the Premier race in first round of the Ingliston Crit Series supported this year by Glenrothes Accident Repair Centre*. After some brief flurries of activity off the front, Ross Muir (velo Ecosse) took the first sprint prime. Shortly afterwards teammate John Stollery attacked strongly and was joined by MacGregor and Richard Chapman (Unattached).

This proved to be the crucial move even though the lead never stretched beyond 25 seconds. Jonathan McBain (Pedal Power) was the main driving force on the front of the bunch but with no concerted chase the trio stayed away. MacGregor took the second sprint prime uncontested and saved his legs to just edge out Chapman in the final sprint to record a morale boosting win. Wily head Ivor Reid (clachnacuddin CC) made his trip from Inverness worthwhile by taking the bunch sprint 23 seconds later from last year's series winner and king of the sprints Evan Oliphant (Velo Ecosse) with team mate Muir fifth.

In the supporting race an attack went from the gun prompted by Martin Ross and Shaun Rhodes of Edinburgh Road Club. On the third lap they were joined by 7 chasers including series sponsor Pete Lambie (Kingdom RT), his teammate Shane Charlton, and fellow Fifers Kevin Barclay (Edinburgh Racers) and Tony Reidy (Pro Acta Expressa). These six stayed clear to the finish as the field fragmented behind. Barclay took the win in a tight finish from Rhodes and Reidy the 2002 Youth series winner.

*Glenrothes Accident Repair Centre is the main sponsor of the 2003 series thanks to the generosity of owner Pete Lambie who regularly rides the event and finished third in last years First Division. Thanks are also due to ongoing sponsors Velo Ecosse, the Bicycleworks, Edinburgh Bicycle and the Scottish Cycling Development Project. The event is underwritten by the Scottish Cycling Union for its contribution to cycling development.
