Western Province Championships

May 13-14, 2006

Team CSC/CVT riders triumph in elite and u/23 categories

The Western Province Road Championship title was up for grabs Saturday (13 May) and once again the honours in the hotly-contested Elite and Under 23 categories went to two Team CSC/CVT riders, Garth Thomas and Algeria’s Abdelbasset Hannachi.

Twenty one year old Hannachi, the newest member of Team CSC/CVT, also won Sunday’s U/23 Time Trial title.

At Saturday’s 130km event near Malmesbury, Team CSC/CVT captain Garth Thomas and Hannachi powered to the lead as the bunch of approximately 40 riders took the final corner to the finish line. Thomas crossed the finish line ahead of Robbie Rodriques to claim the Elite title while Hannachi, hot on Thomas’ wheel, took second place overall and the U/23 title.

The race - which took place in slippery, wet conditions - had been dominated throughout by CSC/CVT riders with Chris Willemse Jnr, Travys Wilkins and Dean Hopf leading several attacks in an attempt to break up the bunch.

Top rider Darren Lill and veteran cyclist Robbie Rodriques looked particularly dangerous during the last 20kms of the event, as did several riders from the GT-Eduloan Maties Team and, towards the end of the race, Lourens Calitz from Team Richard Kane.

Commenting on this team’s performance, CSC/CVT team manager Chris Willemse Snr said: “It was a spectacular win for CSC/CVT. Our riders were under pressure throughout the race but clever racing, combined with excellent teamwork, allowed them to outclass the others.”

Saturday’s racing was followed by the Time Trial Championship on Sunday, where Hannachi, the only member of Team CSC/CVT to participate in the Time Trial event, triumphed yet again. Not only did he win the U/23 TT category but he rode the second fastest overall time of the day.
