Leinster regional road race championships

Dundalk, July 30, 2006

Craig Sweetman (Stamullen M. Donnelly) took his best victory of the season yesterday when he took the Irish Leinster regional road race championships in Dundalk.

Sweetman spent much of the rain lashed race in a chasing group, just under a minute off the lead group. The former international and his Stamullen M. Donnelly teammate Frank O’Connor made a last ditch effort to bridge the gap on the final of seven laps of an undulating nine mile circuit around Knockbridge. Along with Connor Murphy (Murphy & Gunn / Newlyn Group), the duo joined the lead group of Dave Peelo (Murphy Surveyors), Stephen O’Sullivan, Aidan Crowley (both Myhome.ie/ cycleways), Neil Delahaye (Usher Insulations) and Murphy & Gunn / Newlyn Group trio Adrian Hederman, Derek Burke and John Wall in the closing kilometres.

After a succession of attacks, first by Delahaye, then by the Murphy & Gunn quartet, O’Connor went to the front with four kilometres to go to keep the tempo high for Sweetman to unleash his sprint. “Frank did a fantastic job,” said Sweetman afterwards. “Derek Burke jumped away near the end and Frank went to the front, brought him back and basically rode at 60kph for the last four kilometres to set it up for the sprint. It’s been a great weekend for the club after wining the team prize in the time trial championships on Saturday.”

Sweetman, who claimed his third victory this year, having won the Brendan Carroll Memorial and the Ballivor Grand Prix earlier in the season, stormed across the line to take his third victory of the season and added gold to his team gold at the previous days time trial championships. Peelo took silver ahead of Sullivan with Murphy getting the better of Delahaye and Burke for fourth. O’Connor who posted the second best time in the time trial championships, took seventh and with it the ‘B’ title to add to his 'B' time trial title of the day before. "I'm in pain," he grimaced at the end of the race, "But the pain is worth it when somebody from the team wins."
