Des Hanlon Memorial Race

Carlow, Ireland, March 20, 2005

Rory Wyley did not disappoint his supporters when he delivered an emphatic win in the Des Hanlon Memorial held over 140 kilometres in the Carlow/Kilkenny area yesterday.

The Dungarvan cyclist had come into the race, not alone as favourite but also as the defending champion and he certainly lived up to that billing. This was also the first event in a series of six events in a 'Classic League', and brought together the cream of the crop in Irish cycling from all corners of the island.

No sooner had the flag dropped to start the event than the action started in a flurry, with 12 riders moving ahead of the big bunch. On the second passage there was a further split, with Philip Cassidy, now in his 26th season, and Timmy Barry detaching themselves from the break and setting out their stall.

Wyley decided to call time on the duo as they headed through Castlecomer for the last time after being ahead for over a lap. Barry, a team mate of Wyley, wasn't going to assist Cassidy, who made some valiant attempts to chase him down.

On the finishing line in Carlow town it was Wyley who had stretched his lead to win by a minute from Barry, who just about had enough reserves in the tank to get second place ahead of Cassidy. This was Wyley's third win of the season and each has been fashioned out of courses with at least one good climb, to land the jab that has sent his rivals to the canvas. On this form, Wyley looks a red hot favourite to win the upcoming Credit Union Ras Mumhan next weekend.
