McDarby wins round two of Boot Inn League

BuaSports rider Gillian McDarby showed the benefits of her track training and racing when she sped to victory in the second round of the Cycling Ireland Women's Midweek league at the Boot Inn on Wednesday May 5th, near Dublin Airport. McDarby outsprinted Orla Hendron (Orwell - Dundrum Shopping Center) and Siobhan Jacob (Usher IRC) at the end of the twenty mile race, with Hendron's team-mates Joanie Burns and Karen Bothwell next to cross the line. Margie Philips (unattached) was sixth.

A good field turned out in spite of the poor weather, with the riders choosing to stay together for three of the four laps and so help those starting off in the sport. Bothwell got the hostilities underway as the bunch turned on to the final lap, jumping clear and being chased by McDarby and Jacob.

Burns and Hendron rejoined the leading trio to make it five up front, and from then the Orwell-Dundrum Shopping Centre riders did what they could to try to wear down the league leader Jacob and set one of their own up for the win. Bothwell went clear but was hauled back by Jacob and McDarby; Hendron then countered, dragging the latter two away and setting the scene for that three up sprint and McDarby's fine win.

Despite the efforts of the Orwell-Dundrum Shopping Centre team, Jacob continues to lead overall. However her lead has been cut to just one point over Hendron and McDarby.

The Boot Inn League will continue with the third round this Wednesday. This will be a Bonus Night event, with extra points and prizes on offer. Those new to the sport are, as always, very welcome to turn up for the handicapped events.

The women's commission has announced that the race advertised for July 21st will be relocated to coincide with the Lucan Stagg Cycles LCF Festival race on the same night. Normal Boot Inn League points will apply. More details to follow.
