Victorious return for O'Brien in Banteer

By Shane Stokes, irishcycling.com

Home on a break from racing in France with the rest of the VC La Pomme squad, Paídi O'Brien showed his good form when he won today's Mick Cahill Memorial race in Banteer. O'Brien was one of seven riders who went clear in the early stages, with numerical superiority certainly lying with the Cidona Carrick Wheelers trio of Rory Wyley, Timmy Barry and Brian Kenneally.

Riding in a far more organised and determined fashion than the main bunch, this septet built up a lead of almost one minute. Banteer riders Richie and Fergal Cahill then mounted a serious chase, cutting the lead briefly to thirty seconds before it started to open out again. Up front, O'Brien and Wylie went clear on the new, eight mile finishing lap which included a hill known locally as the 'Mountain Road', racing onwards to their final finishing positions of first and second. Richie Cahill, meanwhile, staged a last gasp chase to overhaul the remainder of the break and net third place, with Barry, Sean Lacey (Earl of Desmond CC) and Pat Kenneally (Cidona Carrick Wheelers) completing the top six.

Meanwhile Brendan Lacey (Earl of Desmond), Noel McCarthy (Fermoy CC), Eoin White (Dungarvan CC) and St. Finbarr's Siobhan Dervin ran out as winners in the senior 2, veterans, junior and women's categories. Double FBD Milk Rás winner Stephen Spratt was best of the senior 3 riders, making a successful return to racing. His participation in that race will, however raise debate, as it is questionable whether a rider of his proven class and experience should be permitted to race alongside those new to the sport. On current form he will be racing in the higher categories before long, but the question remains.
