Jacob wins round one

International rower-turned cyclist Siobhan Jacob (Usher IRC) dominated this evening's opening round of the 2004 CI Women's Boot Inn league, reaching the finish over one minute clear of Orla Hendron (Orwell - Dundrum Shopping Centre) and her own team-mate Roisin Kennedy. Gillian McDarby, Anna Franklin and Margie Philips (all unattached) filled the rest of the places in the top six.

Today's twenty mile race was a big success for the Women's Commission, with a total of eighteen riders defying the poor weather to turn out. "We were very happy with the numbers, particularly as the weather was pretty bad," said Dolores Usher of the Women's Commission. "Eighteen girls took part, including some who had never turned up at our races before. They had either been brought along by friends or saw details of the league on the web; if we can continue to build on this, it would be great for women's cycling."

Tonight's event took place over four laps of the flat Boot Inn circuit. The field was divided into three groups, with six minutes covering the bunches. Jacob, Hendron, Kennedy and McDarby set off last but worked well together to reel in the other riders on the third lap. Jacob then attacked strongly and soloed to an impressive win ahead of Hendron, with gaps of approximately ten seconds between the other riders in the top six.

The next Boot Inn league race will take place in two weeks time. Beginners are particularly welcome, with the handicap system catering for all levels. Contact Dolores Usher for information on 086 2302573 or by email at start@womenscycling.info.
