Atlantic Hotel Grand Prix

Westport, August 23, 2003

By Tommy Campbell

David O'Loughlin who returns to his American team, Ofoto Lombardia next Monday brought his tally of wins to the magical figure of a dozen wins after he won the Atlantic Hotel Grand Prix in Westport on Saturday evening. Not the bakers dozen (13)! though: "I'll have to get two wins on the trot, no I'm not superstitious, but I still want to get off that mark," said O'Loughlin.

Held on a very tight circuit, in the centre of one of the busiest thoroughfares in the West of Ireland on a Saturday evening, with conditions perfect for racing.

It started at 8.30 in the evening and attracted one of the biggest audiences in recent years to watch a criterium.

From the off, the pace was fast and furious with Paidi O'Brien home from his base in France stringing out the competitors as they lapped at just under two minutes. O'Loughlin was content to play a waiting game as he methodically upped his pace and with 20 minutes of racing, he moved up to share the lead with O'Brien. The duo eventually went clear and eventually lapped the entire field. In the dash to the line, it was O'Loughlin who delighted the large crowd with his win.

Race organiser, Brendan Quigley was grinning like a Cheshire cat after what and rightly so was a magnificent spectacle for the large crowd, "I don't know I can improve on this, but between myself and Joe McGuire, next year it'll be bigger and better," said Quigley.
