Bob Andrews was the winner of the first ever Kyoto Cup bicycle race. The unseasonably warm temperature of +1 degree (Celsius) allowed a group of nine riders to do the ten kilometer distance on the Baldonnel road.

Pat Ferris led the sprint out near the end of the distance. Bob Andrews waited until near the end to pull past Ferris to easily win with a time of 25:24 minutes. Kevin Cooper was a close third. Richard Wood and Roger St. Jean were in a dead heat for fourth.

Gord "the Hammer" Harris was fifth at 26:02, Barb Polehoykie sixthat 26:39 and Floyd Polehoykie held off Adam Currie for seventh at 27:12.

The Kyoto Cup was put up by Ferris Fast Cycles to give locals a January race. The last five years have occasionally been warm enough to ride on the roads. A normal average for this time of year is minus 14 degrees with the record coldest of minus 47.2 in 1930 and 1947. This is an early event, even by Blizzard Bike Club standards. The locals usually don't start racing outside until early March.
