Peel District Cycling Club Championships, Mandogalup - September 22, 2007

Deisel powers home

A fairly average turn out for the Club Championships considering the beautiful weather, but in spite of small numbers there was some exciting racing at Peel District Cycling Club's Championships. A grade led off for six laps of the 12.2 kilometre undulating course. The group more or less stayed together until the fifth lap when Alan Clark decided that he had gone far enough and parked. Mark Roberts was away for a while and in looking back to see the gap ran off the road onto the gravel strip – fortunately he managed to get back on to road without falling but had lost his advantage. The final sprint was long and slightly up hill and Phil Deisel came from the back to take first place very quickly followed in by Russell Fryer and Geoff Marshall.

In the B grade event the riders again stayed together until the pace took its toll forcing the retirement of Phil Edwards and Fraser Hanlan. The remaining riders had a long hard sprint at the end with Andy Bennet getting four seconds on Rob Davis while Wade Longworth, doing well to complete the long race, came in third.

The C grade event was marked by fast and consistent lap times, very close to B grade's times. On lap three Tony van Merwyk punctured and had to walk most of the way to the start before being picked up. The final sprint was a grueling effort with Joe Cox, pushing an incredibly high gear, taking the win from Stan Baker and Sheona Clark. Sheona found later that she had had her front brake rubbing for part of the race so did very well to be in at the kill.
