Riverland Cycling Club

Handicap road race, Lindsay Point - Sunday, October 7, 2007

Dalzie dazzles

Riverland Cycling Club members gathered at Lindsay Point Road, Paringa for a club handicap race. Some 16 riders nominated to compete, making it the largest field of riders for the winter road season so far.

Gordon Lawton was off limit, with John Dalziel at 12.5 minutes. Next off, at the 22 minute mark, in the largest grouping of riders, were Peter Weston, Glen O'Brien, Angelo Ylia and John Eshman.

Five groups remained including Claire Treilibs and Rebecca Ormsby leaving at 24 minutes, followed three minutes later by Peter Evans and Greg Hatcher. Ben Kaethner and John Jeffrey had 28.5 minutes to rein in from Lawton but had a buffer of one minute to the chopping block riders of Angus Boase and Mick Gray. Riding off scratch this week was Nigel Willoughby and Lee Stevens 31 minutes behind lone rider Lawton.

With Nigel Willoughby fresh from a stint in Pakistan, the scratch group started reeling in the riders. At the turnaround only six riders remained in front. All riders in the chasing bunch were working well together and it seemed that it was only a matter of time before Lawton was caught.

On the return leg, a touch of wheels in the middle of the pack split the riders up with Peter Evans taking an un-expected ride in the gravel. All riders managed to stay upright, but now the pack was split with only a few remaining to do the work.

Lawton was in sight and one rider remained in the lead - Dalziel. The somewhat reduced chasing bunch pushed hard with Lee Stevens succumbing to the extra pace. It was all too late as Dalziel managed to hold off all the riders to take the win. Nigel Willoughby held off the fast finishing group to take second place with the fastest time, a 1.13.24 at an average speed of 38 km/h.
