The annual Bob Francis Memorial race was held on Sunday with 12 riders nominating for the event. Janine Webb claimed the title for the perpetual trophy followed by John Eshman and Angelo Ylia. Matthew Benson completed the 46km race in a time of 1:14'24, taking out fastest time by a margin of two minutes.

Gordon Lawton and Megan Taylor were the first to leave 7.5-minutes ahead of John Eshman, Angelo Ylia and Janine Webb. Ruth Strout, Peter Weston and Peter Evans may have had a 9.5-minute advantage over the chopping block riders; Mick Gray and Angus Boase, but they still had to chase down those that rode off-limit 15.5-minutes prior. Lee Stevens and Matthew Benson made up the scratch bunch set with the challenge to pursue the field and claim fastest time, 2-minutes behind chopping block.

Lindsay Point's first victim was Taylor returning early after being dropped by Lawton early in the piece. Eshman, Ylia and Webb remained strong and fought hard to keep the remaining field at bay. Their determination was rewarded with the top three placing's ahead of Evans, Benson, Boase and Weston, who were unable to bridge the gap in time.

Chasing down the field is almost everyone's objective in a handicap event but none more so than when you're dropped from the bunch. Stevens had a mighty challenge on his hands when he blew a gasket and was dropped by Benson. Although he recovered and felt strong it was all too late with Benson, Gray and Boase now in a bunch and out of reach.

Benson's strength was again on show as he pushed it home with Weston by his side, claiming fifth place and fastest time ahead of chopping block riders Boase and Gray.

The Riverland Cycling Club would like to thank Dolcie Francis and her son Peter for their continued support of the event in memory of Bob; husband, father and cycling enthusiast.
