Sime dominates in A Grade

A Grade riders were feeling the heat early on in the 60km road race with Shannon Sime, Ben King and Michael Dowell leading the charge. By lap two Sime had made a decisive break with King, Dowell and Ray Gillespie staying within striking distance. At this point Geoff Marshall had drifted unceremoniously off the back as Bob Addy continued to press on in company with Phil Diesel and Raymond Loly before the later two succumbed to the frantic pace calling it quits with two laps remaining.

However, up front Sime sizzled over the circuit increasing his lead in the closing stages to comfortably cruise over the line in 1.35.07. Further back King, Dowell and Gillespie had their own battle for the minor placings and in a blanket finish the trio finished in that order.

The B Grade contingent decided to navigate the course in a tight bunch with strong work up front from Brian Buck, Alan Clarke and Russell Fryer. Wayne Lally, Paul Slocombe and Brett Clapham also pushed proceedings along in a strong field but overall no one was prepared to turn up the heat until the final kilometre. As with last week's result, Fryer was once again too strong in the run home, exploding away from the bunch with Clark holding out Marshall with Clapham fourth. Bob Stephens led the rest in.

Another good turnout in C grade saw Steve Goulds record his first win of the season holding out a fast finishing Wade Longworth in second. For the most part C Grade remained intact and shared the workload in the 40km event. On the last lap the speed went up a notch resulting in Jack Iveson and Ruth Haslam slipping off the back, but still within reach of rejoining the leading group. Once again the result came down to a sprint finish with Goulds ahead of Longworth and Shoena Clark third. Rob Davis held off Alan Taylor for fourth.
