In idyllic weather, over 300 riders took to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the Degani Cafe Bakery Phillip Island Cycling Grand Prix. First on the track were the 27 teams assembled for the first round of the CSV Victorian Super Series, with 130 riders on the start line. Pre-race favouritism was split between the strong Victorian Institute of Sport team, and Australia's only Professional Continental team, Drapac Porsche led by Australian road champion Darren Lapthorne.

Racing over 25 laps of the undulating circuit, the big field initially made it difficult for attacking riders to hold off the bunch for long, but in the final eight laps a select group of eight riders forced their way clear. Sean Finning and Glenn O'Shea represented the VIS team, and the CCCC/SHM Elite team also had a pair of riders in the move, with Matt Chessum and Peter Barnett bringing plenty of horsepower. Casey Munro was the sole Drapac Porsche rider, with the rest of the group made up of climbing sensation Jono Lovelock (bikeNOW), Shaun McCarty (Decked Out Coaching) and Jacob Sutherland (Specialized Total Rush).

The wind, which had been assisting the field down the main straight for the first half of the race had swung round to blow in off Bass Strait. Lapthorne (Drapac) used the new tail wind to surge on the climb to Lukey Heights the following lap and set off to join the lead group, towing VIS pair Pat Shaw and Nick Walker, and Matt Sherwin (Carnegie Caulfield CC) across to the leaders.

With four riders in the break, the VIS had all but wrapped up the team win and set a fearsome tempo which saws the lead grow past thirty seconds and head towards a minute. The Decked Out Coaching team moved to the front of the peloton and chased for two laps, but made little impression as the break powered along.

The VIS used their strength in numbers to split the lead group on the penultimate lap, with Commonwealth Games Points Race champion Sean Finning sacrificing his own chances to give the VIS a stranglehold on the race. Four survived to sprint for the win, and Walker provided a perfect lead out for Glenn O'Shea to sprint to the line ahead of Lapthorne with Matt Chessum in fourth.

The VIS were comfortable winners of the team's classification, with Drapac Porsche just edging out the new club based CCCC/SHM Elite squad for second place. VIS captain Pat Shaw later revealed the team had dedicated their efforts to the memory of Ted Sanders, father of VIS coach Dave, who had passed away on Thursday after a long illness.

Another 180 odd riders tackled the afternoon session in the graded club racing that followed. The A Grade win went to Leongatha youngster Nick Aitken ahead of Cam Winton (Doherty's Sheet Metal) after the pair powered away from the bunch with nearly 60km to race.

Vaughan Bowman, who was backing up after the team's race to finish the day with just under 200km of racing, attacked the chase group with a handful of laps remaining and looked to have third place wrapped up before Stuart Smith and Boon Chia reached him on the final lap, with Smith sprinting home to take third.

A two man break also took the top honours in B Grade, with Michael Day (Fitzroy Cycles) too strong for CCCC junior Brent Tomlinson (Hampton Cycles). Again, a late chase group escaped the field, but had the bunch hot on their heels by the final sweeping bend. The escapees kicked again as they turned into the finish and held off the bunch, with David Short taking third ahead of Sean Carruthers (Hampton Cycles) and Oliver Le Grice. Kerryn Charman (Inexa) finished well up in the bunch to take the women's prize.

C Grade provided the only bunch sprint of the day, with Perry Johnston proving too quick for Adam Kliska and Dave Williams. D Grade continued the trend of successful two man breaks, with strong first timer Tristan Whitear and Justin Murphy putting the bunch out of contention. Former world masters champion Debbie Hobbs led home a Fitzroy Cycles quinella in the women's division, with a good sprint to hold off Kerrie Howard and Radelle Berriman (Terry Hammond Cycles).

D Grade continued the trend of successful two man breaks, with strong first timers Tristan Whitear and Justin Murphy putting the bunch out of contention. Whitear took a convincing win, while third went to another debutant in Trevor Coulter. Up and coming junior Callum Fryer (O'Mara Cycles) sprinted into fourth place, with Rebecca Domange the leading lady ahead of Carla Lawson and Shae Thomas.

Leongatha riders dominated the junior race, which was mentored by Matt Sherwin after his top ten finish in the teams race. Kiaran Plunkett took the win ahead of Elliot Gin and Michael Wight.

The fantastic day of racing wouldn't have been possible without the co-operation of the Phillip Island circuit staff, the CSV commisaires led by Neville Williams, and the contributions of all the CCCC volunteers manning the gate, taking entries, assisting with judging and driving support vehicles. Special thanks to CCCC's Matt Wright, CSV camera operator, and Christine Bell for their work later in the evening to double check the finish line footage in order to provide the detailed results which are published at www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
