It was a perfect autumn day for the running of the first Canberra Cycling Club Winter criterium at Stromlo Park. Racing was held across all grades with many competitors maintaining their good form from the recent Canberra Tour. There was good participation in the early grades and while numbers were down overall, competition was keen, with sprint primes sponsored by Rideshop.

In the men's B grade, several early attacks were promptly chased down until Simon Claringbold seized the initiative. After claiming the prime he attacked a tired bunch at the top of the main straight and, with only one rider able to follow him, opened a small gap. The group struggled to work together as the lead grew. With four laps to go Greg Nelson took up the chase and with the pace wound up, a resurgent bunch tried hard to catch Claringbold who was now off the front alone. But it was to no avail In the end, Claringbold holding on by a hundred metres to take the win.

A small turnout for the women's A grade race inspired organisers to experiment with a new format. Several riders from the men's A and B grades formed teams based around two female competitors, Narelle Hards and Meg Ross. With several sprint primes on offer, racing was competitive between the two groups. Hards claimed the first prime but was bettered by Ross for the second and third.

As fatigue began to reduce the size of their teams, it was Ross who took up the attack. Abandoned by their teams with half a lap to go, Hards and Ross contested a thrilling sprint to the line with Hards claiming victory by several lengths.

The men's A grade race saw a breakaway from Michael Tolhurst and Tim Buchanan who worked effectively to open a gap on the field. With three sprint primes on offer, it was Buchanan who took out the first. At the halfway mark, Tolhurst put in a strong attack on his companion, gaining a commanding lead of more than half a lap on the now dwindling main group. With Buchanan rejoining the bunch, team VeloCanberra had the numbers to nullify any pursuit of their team mate, Tolhurst, who claimed the second and third primes and recorded a convincing victory.
