Illawarra Cycling Club

Scratch race - March 25, 2007

Greathead, Great Legs, Great Win

James Greathead outsprinted Roger Ocvirk to win Sunday's A grade race. The last race of the summer season was a 37 km scratch race held in 4 grades.

The combination of a strong southerly wind and heavy legs, as a result of the training being done for the upcoming Canberra race by most of the A grade bunch, meant nobody was able to breakaway during the race, until the last 4 km.

After the final ascent of Hooker Hill, Greathead attacked on the false flat and Ocvirk was the only rider quick enough to jump on his wheel. Greathead was the stronger rider and did most of the pacesetting on the run home. The chasing bunch was unable to close the gap and Ocvirk honourably refused to contest the sprint leaving Greathead a worthy winner.

Leonie Aisbett led the chasing bunch home to take 3rd place 9 seconds later.

In B grade, nobody was able to break from the pack and the race ended up decided by a bunch sprint.

Joe Chiaverini led the sprint out with riding partner Tony Pulo on his wheel. Matt Hennessey moved up ready to jump and was closely marked by Garry Mandy.

Chiaverini allowed Pulo to initiate the sprint and cunningly boxed in Mandy in the process. By the time Mandy had checked his run, and was able to move clear of the other riders, it was too late. Pulo finished first followed by Mandy, Hennessey and Jeff Vaughn-Floyd.

Many of the Bgrade bunch are beginning to suspect there may be some collusion between Pulo and Chiaverini.

Former Illawarra Cycle Club member Paul DuBois showed he still has strong legs in the C grade race. DuBois delighted in taking a series of 2 km turns at the head of the race with none of the other riders able to do much pace setting. After more than a dozen such efforts, Lou Jonceski sensed DuBois was tiring and attacked within sight of the finish to win the race. Jonceski finishe 1st, Carlo Paiola crossed the line for 2nd and DuBois finished 3rd.

Jenni Vaughn Floyd won the D grade race from Juan Ruiz after doing the majority of the front running during the race.

There is no local racing next weekend due to the Southern Division Road Titles being held at Bredalbane.

Also a quick cheerio to popular Illawarra Cycle Club member Tim Morris while he recovers from his injuries.
