Track Championships - Sunday, March 11, 2007

Track Championships began on Sunday with our largest field of riders in some weeks. Bob Pankhurst returned to the track after winning two silvers at the Masters Games held in Murray Bridge.

Gusty conditions made it tough for Day 1 of the championships with the sprint battles sapping the energy from all the nominated riders. Lee Stevens claimed the fastest flying 200m in a time of 14.11 seconds followed by Hamish MacKirdy; 14.89.

The Match Sprints competition was programmed in for day one; riders' competing against each other to get the official placing's for the Championship. Progressing to the B Grade finals were Bob Pankhurst and Angelo Ylia whilst Lara MacKirdy and Wayne Woosnam were to battle it out for the Bronze. Pankhurst continued his strong form by claiming victory ahead of Ylia, followed by MacKirdy taking out the win over Woosnam. Ruth Strout had a convincing win over Gordon Lawton to claim 5th place in the Match Sprints.

Hamish MacKirdy and Lee Stevens competed in the A Grade competition, deciding that the best of three would be the victor. Tactically it is a very challenging race and although the pair kept forward momentum, spectators may have thought they were watching a Mexican standoff. In a tight finish MacKirdy claimed the win with victory in two of the three races leaving Stevens to claim second.

The conditions may not have been ideal for sprint contests but there was a track championship to be held and all riders faced the same conditions. The 4000m individual pursuits were long tough battles against some extremely strong wind gusts; determination and leg strength would see the strongest rider home. Hamish MacKirdy's 5:49.59 minute pursuit was un-matched with Stevens the closest at 17.11 seconds behind. Gordon Lawton claimed 8th in a time of 8'18.14minutes behind Ruth Strout; 7:41.33. Wayne Woosnam recorded 7:29.37 to finish just 0.16 seconds ahead of Lara MacKirdy. The fourth fastest time, 7:19.96, belonged to Bob Pankhurst behind Angelo Ylia who posted 7:12.19 for the individual pursuit.

Day two of the Track Championships will be held on Sunday 18th March with individual times still up for grabs. Further information is available from www.riverlandcyclingclub.com
