The Riverland Cycling Club continues to hold its Sunday races despite the annual decline in nominations over the winter months. Lake Bonney, Barmera played host for the Mark Manning Memorial Trophy Race. Nine riders nominated for the event including Megan Taylor who was eager to make her return for this race in particular. Could she take out back-to-back victories or would the lack of race practice see her succumb to the road?

Taylor rode off-limit followed two minutes later by Gordon Lawton. John Eshman and Angelo Ylia had to wait a further 13 minutes to contest the race. Janine Webb and John Dalzell began their chase 17 minutes behind Taylor followed by the lone chopping block rider, Peter Weston 1.30 minutes later. Scratch duo Lee Stevens and Matthew Benson were forced to chase the field 11 minutes behind Weston.

It may have been six degrees when the race began but with the NNE wind chill riders would have sworn the temperature was only a few degrees above zero!

Taylor pushed hard throughout the race to keep the chasing bunch at bay until the town's outskirts. The determined Lawton put up a brave fight; also riding the race solo, only to be passed five kilometres from home by Stevens and Benson. Weston and Dalzell followed shortly after.

Eshman and Ylia may have thought they had it won until they came into view by the scratch men. Stevens pushed it up a notch in an attempt to real the leading pair in but it wasn't enough as Ylia and Eshman caught on to the attack and stepped up to the challenge.

Eshman claimed line honours ahead of Ylia, followed by Benson who recorded the fastest time at 1:08.12; a mere three tenths of a second ahead of Stevens. Taylor crossed fifth in front of Weston and seventh placed Dalzell. Lawton and Webb rounded out the placing's for this years Mark Manning Trophy Race.
