Gordon Lawton had a courageous win at Loveday on Sunday. The graded handicap meant he was not only the outright winner but also took out first place in the E Grade competition. Riding solo for the 34km was a challenge in itself, but to average 28km/hr and keep the remaining riders at bay was his greatest triumph.

Simon Woods returned to the racing scene wearing an appropriately coloured Green Jersey, usually the colour for sprint competitions, taking out second overall and line honours for the graded race. Woods charged home 3 minutes behind Lawton but a clear winner from his counterparts, averaging 33km/hr over the 45km event. Peter Evans claimed third followed by Peter Weston and Amanda Steele to round out the C Grade competition who started 8.5 minutes behind the off limit bunch of Angelo Ylia, John Eshman and Megan Taylor.

Angus Boase finished his race on a high, sprinting up the straight to take out first place for A Grade and sixth overall. Lee Stevens could only watch Boase's charge as he followed him from behind to claim seventh overall ahead of fellow grade member Nigel Willoughby.

Claiming first for D Grade was John Eshman, all smiles from the trio as they crossed the line together much like they had ridden the entire race. Taylor followed within half a wheel to claim tenth overall followed by Ylia.

Glen O'Brien was set a challenge, B Grade. In his first race off chopping block, just 6.5 minutes ahead of the scratch bunch, O'Brien managed to stay with his bunch for the three laps before being caught by A Grade. Although he was eventually dropped it was a fantastic ride for a newly promoted rider who can take pride in his accomplishments. Mick Gray worked well with the A Grade bunch until a flat tyre saw him lose ground. Catching other dropped riders in his final lap allowed them to re-group and finish the race. Taking out first place for B Grade was Gray followed by Josh Steele and O'Brien.

Racing continues on Tuesday night at Monash for the Criterium series followed by Track Racing in Renmark on Sunday. See you there.
