Illawarra Cycling Club

Club Criterium Championships, Sunday January 28, 2007

Mr T Triumphs

On the Australia Day weekend the Illawarra Cycling Club held its Club Criterium Championships. A Criterium is a spectacular form of racing held on a small circuit, usually less than a kilometer in distance that requires good cornering skills and a good turn of speed. The club worked in collaboration with land developers Council, Police and local residents to hold the race at the new Haywards Bay development.

Races are time based with the riders being notified of 3 laps to go at the end of their time limit. In the 15 minute D-Grade event the bunch stayed pretty well intact with Vince O’Dwyer taking the sprint victory.

In the C-Grade event strong work was being done by Geoff Pollard and Peter Evans and along with Hannah Lee these 3 riders broke clear from the rest of the race. With 2 laps to go Pollard was looking strong, but he had timed his run too early. Evans took a chance in the last lap, but nearly came unstuck as he failed to make the corner and had to run wide onto the grass. In the end it was Lee who kept it smooth and fast to take the victory.

The B-Grade event was hotly contested with riders continually attacking off the front during the 20 minutes of racing. By the time the whistle sounded, indicating 3 laps remaining, all of the attacks had been nullified and the bunch was intact. With One lap to go the pace was high with fast man Joe "Pepe" Chiaverini taking the lead with the rest of the riders strung out in single file unable to pass. Flying into the last corner Pepe was still leading, but the effort had taken it’s toll and in the final 50 metres he was overtaken by David McMaster who took an impressive win, with Tony Pulo taking 3rd.

In the 25 minute A-grade event there were many strong attacks and Jeff Grey seemed to be in every one of them. He was joined by many different riders in his various escapades including Hans Battaerd, Tm Morris and Roger Ocvirk. But none of these combinations were allowed to stay away for too long. When the whistle sounded with 3 laps to go Grey was alone off the front with 50 metres lead. James Greathead had done some strong turns to close the race down, and the rest of the field began to get twitchy. With 2 laps to go Morris jumped and only Aaron "Mr T" Terechovs could follow. With half a lap to go they had caught Grey, and Morris kicked again. By the final turn Terechovs had managed to hold Morris’ wheel and the two though hard to the line with Terechovs taking victory, Morris second and Grey holding on for 3rd.

Next week racing resumes at Huntley on Sunday at 8:30am with a 2 person Time Trial over 18.5km.
