Peel Districts CC - Race #8 Rockingham - January 14, 2007
Dave Berglund recorded his fourth win of the Peel Cycling Criterium series from as many starts. Peel Club riders were tested in the warm conditions on the Rockingham Circuit. A Grade were first away and Geoff Marshall wasted no time in surging upfront while early breaks were attempted none proved successful during the 50 minute event. Brian Buck put in a solid solo effort but was eventually reeled in by the patient pack.
It all came down to the bell lap with Paul Slocombe leading the charge while Berglund, Matt Gibbons and Laurie Longworth were searching for the perfect line. In the sprint finish, Berglund's timing was spot on nabbing Gibbons on the line by half a wheel with Raymond Loly third and Michael Dowell holding on for fourth.
The B Grade contingent were smartly into race mode with Ian Clark, Richard Le Tessier and Adam Wise keeping the pack honest. Andy Bennett and Paul Lewis were no slouches either staying in touch with the main bunch as several riders felt the pinch and lost contact. Coming into the finish, Clark held the front position but Le Tessier proved to be too strong in the sprint, crossing the line ahead of Wise with Clark holding on for third.
Further back Bennett maintained fourth ahead of Lewis. It was a more sedate affair in C Grade as Jack Iveson recorded his first win in the series. Tony Ridgely was back in the saddle after a lengthy break and Tom Atkinson again rode strongly. However in the home straight Norton led the charge but Iveson slipped through to take the win from Atkinson, Norton slipped back to third and Club Secretary Peter Moyses fourth. The next event is at Baker St, Pinjarra on Sunday 21st January.
