Greathead claims the Tour de Huntley
On Sunday 21st January the Illawarra Cycle Club held its annual Tour de Huntley. This race involved a 4km time trial plus a 27km points race, with sprints for time bonuses, made all the more difficult by the hot conditions.
In the D-Grade event Diego Diaz dominated both the time trial and points race to take the overall title from Vince O'Dwyer and Jenni Vaughan-Floyd.
Mathew Hennessey from Nowra won the C-Grade race with solid victories in both the time trial and points race. New member Geoffrey Pollard road well to take 2nd in the time trial, but faded in the point race. Triathlete Lee Hannah road an excellent points race to move up to 2nd overall with Lou Jonceski claming 3rd.
In B-grade event Jeff Gray showed that a little time off hasn't slowed him up any. He dominated the race by winning the time trial and then proceeded to break away in the points race to take most of the bonus seconds on offer and finished almost two minutes ahead of his nearest rival Michael Lanyon. In the bunch strong work was being done by Joe Williams and Alan Vucko, but it was Michael Comensoli who surprised all with his sprinting prowess, winning the bunch sprint for 3rd and claiming 3rd overall.
Despite finishing only 5th in the time trial James Greathead road an incredible points race by breaking away on the first lap to win the race and the tour by over a minute. In the bunch a tactical race played out with everyone looking at time trial winner Danny Hennessey to lead the chase. In the end the bunch's pace was erratic with strong attacks coming from Graham Rutter and Tim Morris splitting the group, but the average speed was not fast enough to catch Greathead. At the finish Hennessy had done enough to claim 2nd with Morris taking 3rd overall.
Next week the club will hold its Criterium Championships starting at 8:30am at Haywards Bay. A bunch will leave Spearman Cycles at 7:30am. Also remember there is Thursday night racing for road bikes starting at 6pm.
