Peel Cycling Club held its first meet for 2007 in Rockingham last Sunday. A Grade riders were relatively calm early but testing surges from Dave Berglund soon broke up the field. First to fall back was Andrew Crack and Michael Polmear then Laurie Longworth. Paul Slocombe and Steve Ware pushed hard to stay in touch with Berglund, but with two laps remaining in the 50 minute race Berglund cruised away to take line honours comfortably. Further back Ware led Slocombe to take second and Longworth fourth.
A strong field in B Grade and attacking riding from Brian Buck, Andy Bennett and Ian Clark saw large gaps appearing in the ranks. Dave Lee was leading the remainder of the field but making no ground on the front runners. On the bell lap it was Buck leading the way to take line honours from Bennett and Clark third. Lee maintained his position to finish fourth.
The C graders set a steady pace preferring to keep the group together to tackle the stiff breeze on the back straight. Peter Moyses showed some good form early as did Steve Lockyer. However, going to the line a strong lead out from Bob Norton did not stop youngster Wade Longworth who timed his ride to perfection to take the honours with Norton second, Atkinson third and Hoffman fourth.
