Criterium Series, Victoria, Tuesday, January 2, 2006

The 2007 racing season began with over 20 riders nominating for the Criterium held at Monash on Tuesday night.

A Grade had some stiff competition with visiting cyclist David Simpfendorfer making his annual return from Canberra. As each rider took to the front, those at the back were finding it tough to hang on. The Christmas break finally took its toll on the minor placed riders with Mick Gray, Chris Stevens and Nigel Willoughby out of race contention, leaving Angus Boase caught in the middle. Hamish MacKirdy, David Simpfendorfer and Lee Stevens took out the top three places, MacKirdy claimed first after defeating Simpfendorfer and Stevens in the final sprint.

Simon Woods had a convincing win in B Grade's race, out sprinting second place getter Bob Pankhurst. Barry Trewren made a strong come back to claim third in his first race of the Summer Season, followed by Ruth Strout and Peter Weston. Racing at 34km/hr was out of reach for Aron Woosnam this week. Although he was dropped fairly early, he did manage to keep his legs spinning and finish the race.

C Grade's top place was a tight battle as Glen O'Brien and Janine Webb sprinted down the finishing straight, whilst Webb was obviously keen and in high gear O'Brien was too strong in the end taking victory for the 35 minute race. Angelo Ylia stayed with the leaders in a close-knit bunch for the majority of the race until the infamous last lap. Ylia took out third place ahead of Wayne Woosnam who was just thrilled to hear the bell and cross the line.

Megan Taylor, D Grade's lean mean fighting machine, has claimed her first win of the year out sprinting her mentor Gordon Lawton. Lawton who gives all the new riders some essential racing tips may have to keep a few under wraps to stay ahead of his rivals, Kade Boase and Ralph Anderson.

Track Racing resumes in Renmark this Sunday with races available for both road and track bikes followed by graded Criteriums at Monash on Tuesday night. Further information is available from www.riverlandcyclingclub.com
