It takes two

Teamwork is the key when it comes to the two person time trial event held on Sunday 4th February. Teams of two ride off together with one minute gaps in an attempt to get the fastest time possible as a team. The riders take turns at the front while the other shelters in the slipstream saving up to 30% of the leader's energy. The event favours those riders who can work well together and get the most out of themselves before the finish.

There were no surprises with the winning combination of Craig Paull and James Greathead. Both riders are strong individual time trialists and had the necessary skills to work well together. Paull commented after the event that they were both evenly matched, and that he buried himself riding flat out on the front and then just managed to recover for his next turn while Greathead did the same. The crossed the line in 27:11 averaging around 41km/h.

Second place was a revelation of sorts, with the continental pairing of Joe Chiaverini and Tony Pulo riding above themselves finishing in a time of 29:15. Both riders are normally known for their sprinting prowess, but they rode the event as if it was one long lead out train. The pair were an impressive sight, both wearing the blue Illawarra Club clothing and with Chiaverini cutting the air like a knife in his space age aero helmet. Motivation was high and apparently if the pace dropped Pulo could be heard yelling, "Think of you’re children!"

Of the remaining 13 teams, the third place spot was hotly contested. Three teams vying for the position were only separated by eight seconds. In the end it was Michael Comensoli and Frank Soto who took the podium in 29:30.
