Illawarra Cycling Club

Port Kembla Criterium , December 2, 2007

Experience overcomes youth in Port Kembla Criterium

A perfect morning greeted 31 cyclists as they gathered at Port Kembla’s MM beach for the Illawarra Cycle Club criterium race.

Peter Kelly launched the first attack in the C/D grade race but was quickly caught by strong riding from Nathan Cullan and David Hull. The fast pace saw Juan Ruiz and Mike Mitrevski dropped from the group at around half race distance. Diego Diaz, Hull and Geoff Pollard kept the bunch together until 2 laps to go when Nathan Cullen stepped up the pace to try and shake off the sprinters. With 1 lap to go it was Geoff Pollard driving up the slight hill but Joe Chiavarini had moved to second wheel. Peter Kelly led into the final turn followed by Chiavarini. The crafty sprinter slowed the group around the cone and then exploded down the final 200 metres to win the sprint by 10 lengths. 2nd place was Leigh Jackson followed by David Hull and Peter Kelly.

In B grade Newcastle rider Dave Wiley attacked on Lap 1 and held a gap for two laps but was reeled in by the bunch led by Con Karlis and John Danzo. At half race distance Phil Jones, Tony Burke and Dave Russell put in some strong turns to try and break up the group but without success. Hannah Lee was riding good position near the front with Paul Kaye, Michael Buffet and Phil Jones close at hand. With 3 laps to go Dean Kelly launched a vicious attack up the hill and Dave Russell responded with a strong chase. Karlis bridged across to Kelly as his move stretched the bunch to breaking point and Tony Burke and Hannah Lee were pedalled off the back. Two laps to go and Wiley, Karlis and Kelly attacked hard but John Danzo brought them back and led the bunch on the final lap. It was a 3 way tussle at the line with Wylie winning by a bike length from Michael Buffet and Con Karlis. Paul Kaye was 4th and Dean Kelly 5th.

In the blue riband A grade event the sprinters Tim Morris, Tony Pulo, Daniel Silveri, Roger Ocvirk, Eric Haakonssen and Mark Davis lined up against the strong men Craig Paull, Matt Hennessy, Mick Lanyon, Drew Robertson and Graham Rutter. NSW Institute rider Aaron Donnelly tested the water on Lap 1 with a strong attack but was marked by a watchful Tony Pulo. Mick Lanyon waited until Lap 4 before hitting them hard up the hill and around the cone. He continued to drive hard and the bunch was forced into single file with Matt Hennessy leading the chase. Daniel Silveri was the first to crack under the pressure.

Then Craig Paull blasted off the front and Drew Robertson joined him on Lap 5 but brilliant youngster Aaron Donnelly dragged the bunch across to the leaders with beautiful riding. Paull tried again on the next lap with assistance from Mick Lanyon who was in looking very strong, they held a nice gap for a lap but this time it was Matt Hennessy and Roger Ocvirk who brought the two back. One of Craig Paull’s chain links split under the pressure and jammed his rear derailleur, ripping it off the bike and prematurely ending his race.

Donnelly and Lanyon were driving the bunch at speeds in excess of 50 kph on the hotdog course as the laps mounted. Matt Hennessy continued to try to ride off the front of the group, but he was brought back by Donnelly, then by Ocvirk as the 2 laps to go sign was shown. Final lap and Tim Morris moved into perfect position near the front. He led around the final turn and it was a no contest for the clever sprinter, he won in style by 5 lengths from a fast finishing Aaron Donnelly. Eric Haakonssen was 4th, with speed men Roger Ocvirk, Mark Davis and Tony Pulo not far behind.
