Baldivis graded scratch races, Saturday, August 4, 2007

Phil Diesel, Phil Edwards and Guy Pathe were the winners in the Peel Cycling Club's road racing programme last weekend. A Grade were first away and smartly into a spirited pace in the early laps with Russell Fryer and Diesel combining well up front. Laurie Longworth, Alan Clark and Paul Slocombe also chipped in at the head of the bunch to damping any likely breakaway attempts. Diesel tested the field on several occasions late in the race darting of the front to no avail and Longworth made a brave move with six kilometres remaining only to be reeled in one kilometre from the line with riders now positioning themselves for the sprint finish. In a photo finish Diesel’s lead out gave him the edge to narrowly hold off both Adam Wise second with Fryer third.

B Grade competitors were tested over 50 km with first up rider Nancy Celares putting in a great effort for the most part at the head of the field. Phil Edwards, Allan Cunning and Shoena Clark chipped in to share the workload with Celares as Tony Ridgley slowly drifted off the back in the blustery but warm conditions. Danielle and Wade Longworth made a late move on the final lap only to be brought back to the bunch resulting in another close finish. On the line, honours went to Edwards finishing ahead of Cunning with Danielle Longworth third ahead of Shoena Clark.

The work load again was evenly shared in C Grade with Guy Pathe in control and looking very comfortable throughout the four lap race. Bob Norton was enjoying the early stages of the 40 km as was Alan Taylor and Ken Portman. No photo finish this time around with Pathe cruising to victory with Norton ahead of Taylor and Portman.
