Burgess breaks through

Saturday's race was a 52 km handicap on the Seymour-Mangalore course, with 22 riders racing the event in cool, windy weather. Ron Burgess, Alan Adams, Carl Simmons and Shane Kirby riding from scratch were in top form and powered through the handicap groups, reaching the lead at the 35 km mark. From this point they towed home riders from the four- and seven minute groups to set up a sprint finish of 12 riders. Ron Burgess jumped to the lead with 700m to race and held his break to cross first and record fastest time of 1.17.32.

His co-marker, Shayne Kirby finished second, but Brett Loney robbed the scratchies of a clean sweep by sprinting into third place, just ahead of Alan Adams in fourth.
