50km handicap road race, Murtho - April 29, 2007

Riders take on the elements

The rain eased for this week's 50 kilometre handicap road race held along Murtho road. As last weeks race from Lake Bonney was cancelled due to three punctures and a broken collarbone; riders were determined to make the most of the break in conditions and their handicap on Sunday.

Grey clouds were looming but they held off long enough for the race to get underway with Gordon Lawton and Megan Taylor starting eight minutes ahead of Angelo Ylia, Peter Evans and Janine Webb. Peter Weston, Ruth Strout and Glen O'Brien had a chance to reflect on the elements and their impending chase to catch the off-limit riders who had a 17.5-minute advantage over them. Chopping block's Angus Boase and Mick Gray had a minute break on lone scratchman Lee Stevens but they still had to bridge the 9-minute gap between themselves and the bunch ahead.

A tail wind had the riders moving for the first 25 kilometre allowing Stevens to catch Gray and Boase after 11-minutes of racing. Weston, Strout and O'Brien were unable to bridge the gap to the lead riders where Evans, Webb and Lawton kept up the pressure.

Strout and Weston worked well together to hold off the chasing field until after the turn-around, whilst O'Brien and Taylor were forced to chase from the back after each being dropped by their respective groups.

Peter Evans and Janine Webb put on a brave fight to decide the winner of this weeks handicap road race with Evans having just enough power left in his legs to claim line honours a mere six seconds ahead of Webb. Lawton claimed third place ahead of Stevens and Boase who reeled back 25-minutes from the off-limit riders.

Next weeks event is staged from the Winkie School for our Come and Try Day, Sunday 6th May at 9:30am. If you want a fun and healthy interest, cycling could be for you. Any interested riders and their families are welcome to attend where there will be fun, laughter and a free BBQ lunch on offer. There will be social riding as well as some races for those eager enough to take up the challenge. It could be some extra training for those participating in the up-coming Tour of the Riverland which is now just weeks away. Further information is available from www.riverlandcyclingclub.com See you at the next race!
