Junior scratch race - April 28, 2007

Greathead In a Sprint

James Greathead triumphed in a sprint finish in the A grade 36km scratch race on Saturday. The wet weather halted just at the right time which made for excellent racing conditions except for the odd puddle on the road.

The field of 26 riders was the smallest field for many weeks mainly due to the number of members heading down to Canberra for the weekend, but it was heartening to see some former members returning to the club and a few new faces as well.

The riders were divided into three grades with six juniors lining up for the Junior Scratch Race. The A grade race stayed largely in tact for all of the 36km despite Chris Brown's efforts to split the race early on and some attacking riding from Matt Hennessey and Andrew Rutty.

In the final sprint Greathead pipped Gary Mandy, much to the disappointment of Mandy's junior cheer squad who added some lively atmosphere to the finishing straight, with Hennessey third , Dave Russell fourth and Rutty fifth.

Paul Kaye continued his run of recent good form in taking out B grade, also in a sprint finish. With new riders John Danzo and Anthony Gullace given time to settle into the race, the bunch rode as one until the final lap.

Dean Kelly attacked the bunch with a couple of kilometres to go and Kaye gave an impressive chase to regroup the race again. Danzo thought he had won the race but a misjudged finish meant he was swamped by the other riders.

Kaye finished first from Tim Devlin, Joe Perriera with Kelly hanging on to fourth from Danzo.

In C grade bunch, the largest of the day, stayed mainly intact with Vince O'Dwyer outsprinting Jacob Shannon, third was Jasmine Arnold who continues to impress the other riders. Fourth went to Andy Shannon with returning rider Tegan Makowski fifth from Sam Arnold and Wal Mullany.

The accompanying Junior Scratch race saw six eager riders line up to start.

Steven Russell hinted at some time trialling ability by breaking away to finish first with Bradley Heffernan crossing the line for second and Holly Heffernan in third place.
