Teamwork Wins For Red Team and Terechovs

The first teams road race at Illawarra Cycle Club for more than 15 years saw the Red Team take home the prizemoney as the best team. The 53 riders starting the race, the largest field for a club race in memory, hinted at interest at running further teams events.

The event was ridden as a graded handicap with the field divided into three teams consisting of riders from each of four grades. The finishing time from each team was based on the best five times for each team, but these times had to include one at least time from A grade, one from B grade and one from C or D grade. This last clause would provide decisive.

Some of the riders were a little confused by the concept, but the strongest riders on red team easily recognised the fact they needed to get a rider home from one of the two lower grades.
A grade seemingly had the best chance of winning the race and so it proved with A grade riders filling ten of the first twelve places over the line.

Aaron Terechovs won the bunch sprint for the red team after a bold attack by Craig Paull (team black) had been chased down with less than two kilometres to go. His finishing time of 1:05:11 is the second fastest ever recorded on the 44.5km course

Second place on the line went to Chris Brown (team white) , racing his first race at Illawarra for more than five years. Third went to Adam Rourke (also black), followed by David McMaster (red), Graham Rutter (black), Roger Ocvirk (white), Mark Davis (white) and Craig Paull (black). Time bonuses for the first five riders home meant red team held a slight advantage of eight seconds over both black and white teams.

All teams have plenty of A graders in the front bunch and each had B graders, McMaster for red, Chris Brown for the white team, and Matthew Hennessey, 10th overall for team black. This meant the result would be determine by the best C or D grade rider.

The C grade bunch was given a tough handicap mark and were all but eliminated from the results. After selfless riding from old timers Vince O'Dwyer, Andy Shannon and Peter Vesel the remains of D grade were still in front of the race at Hooker Hill. The four remaining riders were Vince O'Dwyer (black) , Jasmine Arnold (black) , Sam Arnold (white) and Peter Vesel (red).

Jasmine Arnold rode off the front of the bunch going up Hooker Hill, but was reeled just as the riders crested the hill. With two and a half kilometres remaining the four were caught by the main A/B grade group. Jasmine Arnold and Sam Arnold struggled to keep up, mainly due to the restricted gears juniors must use, while O'Dwyer and Vesel both jumped to get on the back of the group. Vesel was the sole rider able to latch on, only due to the fact that his red team teammates Jeff Gray, Leonie Aisbett Aaron Hull and Peter Cooper egged him on and paced him to the finish. O'Dwyer led Jasmine Arnold and Sam Arnold home 52 seconds later. Prize winners in team Red were Terechovs, McMaster, Gray, Hull and Vesel, with Brown, Rourke and Rutter the riders to miss out due to the teams event.

This meant Red team were the winners by 58 seconds, with White team finishing second on count back after recording the exact same time as Black team.

A junior race was also staged with the riders having to do battle with Hooker Hill in a 10km scratch race. Hayley Mandy and sister Paige kept pace with Ben Arnold and Bradley Heffernan on the tough outward leg. Bradley Heffernan launched his attack with two kilometres to the finish line. Ben Arnold tried his hardest to follow Heffernan but neither he, Paige or Hayley were able to match Heffernan's speed. Heffernan finished first from Arnold followed by Hayley Mandy and Paige Mandy in fourth place.
