Diesel powers to champs victory

Phil Diesel took line honours in the Peel Cycling Clubs Road Championships after finishing with a powerful sprint last Saturday. A combined start for A and B grades over 77kms saw a hectic first two laps which caused several riders to withdraw. Breakaway attempts firstly by Darren Lee and then Bob Addy were nullified by the pack. Mark Roberts again showed good form as did Steve Dodd and Geoff Marshall. Paul Slocombe put in a huge effort on the bell lap but with 250 meters to go Diesel, out of the saddle, put the hammer down to surge across the line. Graeme Muston followed to claim second with B Grade riders Bob Addy, third and Steve Ware fourth.

In C Grade it was all Andrew Bennett who lead from the start. Bennett was in full flight over the 66m distance - the pace too much for several competitors. Richard Letessier hung on for second, Danni Longworth and Leanne Hoffman recovered to finish third and fourth respectively.

Mitchell Horwood competing in D Grade found the winning formula after some disappointing results of late. The youngster was too strong for senior riders Tom Atkinson, Joe Cox and Peter Moyeses over the distance of 55kms.
